The individual signing the document must appear in person and present a valid picture ID such as: Government issued ID • Driver's License • Passport • Military ID
The ID must contain a Signature, Physical Description, Photo and Expiration to be acceptable.
If you do not have a valid ID, you may bring a creditable witness that can verify who you are, show their ID, and sign on your behalf. (Please advise beforehand the need of a creditable witness.)
Bring the documents you need notarized. DO NOT remove staples from documents! If the staple is removed the third party may refuse to accept the document due to tampering.
A Notary can NOT advise you on which type of notarization that you need. That would be practice of law, which is illegal. Please be familiar with the type of notarization that you need. Below are the notarization types:
An Acknowledgment is a formal declaration before a notary public by someone who signs a document and confirms that the signature is authentic. You must appear in person and acknowledge execution of the document. Most typical type of notarization.
A Jurat is a certification added to an affidavit or document stating when, where, and before whom it was sworn or affirmed; also known as a “verification upon oath or affirmation”.
An Affidavit is a voluntary written declaration of facts that is sworn to or affirmed by the declarant ("affiant") before a Notary.
A Copy Certification certifies copies of original documents that are not recordable in public records.
The verbiage for these notarization types can be found on the Texas Secretary of State website and added in to any of the documents that you might create. Please leave space in your documents to allow the notary to fill in the information as needed for the notarization.
A Notary Public is disinterested party that has notified the signer of the importance of the document, and the signer has declared that their identity, signature, and reasons for signing are genuine. Notaries perform the following:
